First-year Hilton Head High swim coach Mike Lane had crunched the numbers, so he knew it would take a nearly flawless performance for his Seahawk girls to repeat as Class 3-A state champions on Saturday at the University of South Carolina.

Mike Lane took over the Hilton Head High swim program not knowing quite what to expect.
He assumed the bar was set high, considering the Seahawks girls were coming off a state championship in 2010. The question, though, at least in his mind, was this: How motivated would a group of girls be when it had already accomplished so much?

Midway through the last event Saturday night -- the 400-yard freestyle
relay -- the Hilton Head High girls team had opened a lead of four body lengths.
The race was over early -- much like the girls competition at the Class 3-A state swim meet at the Carolina Natatorium on the University of South Carolina campus.
